parent meeting review

Thank you parents for reading this!

Our desire is to be a “parent equipping” youth ministry. What does that mean? It means

that we want to honor the God-given role of parents in the lives of their students. It

means we know that these times are precious and you will never have the opportunity

you have sitting in front of you every day. The bottom line is that we desire the parents to

be involved in our meetings, our events, and of course the personal lives of their own

students.

In a time when many parents feel the need to “retreat” or let their youth be “on their

own,” we’re asking that you get all the more involved.

“Parent equipping youth ministry” means that you, the parent, take the lead in discipling

your youth. It means that you are at our corporate meetings not just because we’ve

invited you but to listen, apply and ask your youth about it and to be actively involved in

these meetings. We want you to get to know your youth and those they are hanging out

with.

Our calling is to come along side you

We are not going to be the primary ones who lead your youth – you are.

We are not gong to take any responsibility that belongs to you way from you.

Rather, we as a church want to better equip you.

Finding and providing resources, seminars, care groups, corporate meetings like

re:generation or a:lumination, prayer meetings, and pastoral availability for you and your

youth is a very important goal of ours.

We want the youth to know they have pastoral care.

We want them to feel like they can email us or talk to us about things but we will always

direct them back to you.

If you’re a single parent, then life looks a lot different for you at home. We understand

that. Help us to see the areas that we can specifically serve you.

We desire to keep you informed.

Are you on our email list? Are you aware of the up coming schedule of meetings and

events?

Do you have any suggestions of how we can serve you, your youth or your family?

Special Events

We don’t want our special events to be a burden – we want them to be a joy - we want to

have fun! We are not into “activity for activities sake” and we desire to protect the church

by being as strategic as possible with our events.

Here you are!

You are in the middle of an amazing opportunity! And what you do with the seemingly

mundane opportunities of life will have an eternal significance. Here you will make a

contribution that is worth infinitely more than any career or financial accomplishment.

You have been given the privilege of being the primary agent of change in your youth’s

life. You have been given the opportunity to disciple, to model, lead and to encourage.

And we want to come along side you in the process! How exciting is that?!

Consider us a partner in the advance of the Gospel.

Opportunity: disciple

Here are some practical thoughts and questions for the discipleship of

your youth.

1. Learn with your student

Interact with them about the messages they hear. Take advantage of the

corporate meetings and other meetings to the fullest! Refer back to them.

Ask them questions like, “What do you think this passage means for my

relationship with God?”

“Here’s how that impacted me – here’s what I need to change and desire to

change…what about you?”

Don’t expect them to pour themselves out to you. Some of them might do

this…but for the most part, it has to be invited and modeled.

Remember - You are teaching them by the way you pursue them, by the way you

learn from those around you; by the way you interact with your peers, etc.

Are you providing uninterrupted time together? Are you eating together? Do you

have a scheduled time each week to get together with them? (Meet for coffee or

a donut once a week.)

2. Learn from your student

They have a lot of insight. Listen to what they say about the Bible. Instead of

correcting them - first encourage them and find a nugget of truth to highlight.

They are growing in their understanding of the world around them. They will see

things in a unique and often quirky way. Enjoy it!

3. Learn about your student

What is God doing? What are they reading? Why? What’s their favorite band?

Movie? Do you know their friends very well? Share a crazy story from your youth

with them.

Look for opportunities to point your youth to God.

Use the Scriptures in a way that deposit hope and faith in their hearts.

Be a model of prayer

Pray with and for your youth. Pray that you would see the opportunities that

God places in your life to care for and minister to your youth. Pray with and

for your youth when their world feels like it’s falling apart or when they simply

have a big test the next day. Never underestimate the beauty and wonder and

power of prayer. Let them see and hear you pray.

Be willing to humble yourself and ask for forgiveness, accountability and

prayer.

Be willing to use your life as an example of God’s grace at work.

Be an example of someone who is hungry for God!

REJOICING IN CHRIST: God’s Presence Changes Everything!

Philippians 4:2-9

Does God feel far away from you?

Do you imagine a God who doesn’t care for you?

How WOULD time spent with God, in the Word and in grateful prayer, help your

view of Him?

How much time do you worry or stress about what others think about you?

How often do you use your stress as an excuse to do or say things to people that

are rude/ driven by anger or selfishness?

Do you snap at others, lack patience, have to get the last word?

Paul says, “let your gentleness be evident to all.”

Rejoice in God’s unchanging power…knowledge, character, etc.

Rejoice in God!

If rich men rejoice in their money…how much more should we rejoice in the

Lord?

When we think of who He is and what He’s done…there is always something to

rejoice in.

Paul wasn’t writing a letter to be read and then never acted upon – God’s

Word demands our attention – it demands a response reveals

something.

The Lord is near.

He’s present – He’s personal – He is with us.

If I come home late at night from a meeting or an event and Valerie is

waiting for me – I know she wants me to announce my arrival, “Hey Val,

I’m home.” If not, she gets nervous and wonders if what she’s hearing is a

thief or a big monster.

My announcement brings her comfort and peace, “I’m here Valerie.”

The reality of God’s presence should radically affect the way we

live our lives.

How does God’s presence affect the way you’re living? If others

were to examine your life could they determine that you are

living as if God is near?

1. Because the Lord is near, we can/ should make things right

with others (vv. 2-3)

A. Paul’s “plea to agree”

Phil 2:3-5 both women must take on the attitude of Jesus: taking the

initiative, making themselves humble, serving others…even if this comes

at great personal cost!

B. No unresolved conflict allowed!

Conflict among believers needs to be worked out and will often

require the help of others.

We can’t we see it! How often have you been involved in a conflict and, for

the life of you, couldn’t see your sin?

The Devil would love to create division in this group!

C. There’s a danger lurking ahead – and Paul knows it! There’s sense of

urgency here.

When a brother or sister in Christ sins against us how should we respond?

What if, instead of becoming furious and adding to the offense, we see it

as an opportunity….

To humble ourselves

Our sin is first and foremost against God.

When we walk in Pride, James 4:6 tells us that we will be resisted by God

Himself!

1 Peter 5:5 …All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Is God resisting you in a particular area today?

Paul knows that a simple game of “Paper, scissor, rock” won’t solve this

problem.

D. We are His, we are not our own.

It would be weird/ wrong for us to insist on our own way when

our Saviour Himself never did.

What conflict are you presently in with others in the church? In your

family?

2. Because the Lord is near, we can express joy! (vv. 4-5)

A. Verse 4

Rejoicing in Christ doesn’t come naturally; we have to WORK at it!

Why don’t we rejoice more than we do?

Have we somehow convinced ourselves that we deserve what we

have?

Have we somehow forgotten what our future holds in Christ Jesus?

Have we forgotten that we have full access now to God the Father

through His Son and that He’s promised never to leave us or to

forsake us?

B. Acts 16 tells Paul’s story

Consider the way Paul and Silas faced the beatings they received and

the imprisonment they endured – it reflected something.

The other prisoners heard it. Deep in the dark, smelly cell a song rang out!

Bodies beaten and bleeding, bones bruised and muscles sore, yet they

sang. Shackled in chains, no certainty of what tomorrow held but certain of

this:

“God is near! God is with us. He is present. He’s in control. And

we can forgive and let our forbearance and gentleness and

kindness be known to all. Nothing can stop that!”

C. In any and all circumstances we can and must rejoice.

Not because we’re ignoring the circumstance – no, the beatings hurt and

the cell stunk….offenses are real, conflicts happen, trials bring pain and

sorrow. We don’t deny that!

There’s something greater happening when we learn to “rejoice in the

Lord always”God is being acknowledged as present and as

able – this is real worship!

3. Because the Lord is near, we can/ should stop freaking out

and start talking to God (vv. 6)

We’re to talk to God about anything and everything we’re worried about.

What is it that causes you the most anxiety?

As we remind ourselves of who God is – worry gets swallowed up.

Is there a connection between how little we pray and how much we worry?

Verse 8-9

The opposite of verse 8: Whatever is false, dishonest, polluted, shameful,

deserving condemnation…think about such things.

We should fill our minds with excellent and praiseworthy things:

What do we listen to, look at/ watch/ where do we go to online/ what do we think

about/ fantasize about…

Biblical Principals for Cultural Decision Making

whatever decision you need to make - whether it's a small thing to you or not, consider these questions when making that decision.

  • Is it beneficial to me personally and to the gospel generally (1 Corinthians 6:12)?
  • Will I lose self-control and be mastered by what I participate in (1 Corinthians 6:12)?
  • Will I be doing this in the presence of someone who I know will fall into sin as a result (1 Corinthians 8:9-10)?
  • Is it a violation of the laws of my city, state, nation (Romans 13:1-7)?
  • If I fail to do this, will I lose opportunities to share the gospel (1 Corinthians 10:27-30)?
  • Can I do this with a clear conscience (Acts 24:16)?
  • Will this cause me to sin by feeding sinful desires (Romans 13:13-14)?
  • Am I convinced that this is what God desires for me to do (Romans 3:5)?
  • Does my participation proceed from my faith in Jesus Christ - can I do this in faith (Romans 14:23)?

if i had one last thing to say to our high school seniors before i died it would be this

This is a message I spoke at the 2009 high school graduation ceremony at Gulf Coast Community Church. It was an honor. Congratulations to our graduates!

What Does God Ask of You?

Deuteronomy 10:12-22

The way you respond to the question given at the beginning of this passage will

powerfully shape the way you live your life!

“What does the Lord your God ask of you?”

1. Do you have an ever-increasing fear of God?

The fear of God is foundational to our devotion to God and essential if we will

have any kind of expressed desire for Him.

The truth is we are often more concerned with what someone thinks

about our outfit or our new haircut than we are about reverence

towards God and obedience to His commands.

The reason? God is not BIG in our eyes. People are.

We place higher value on their opinions and thoughts than on God’s.

When people are big, God is not.

Proverbs 2:1-6

If I gave you the map to treasure beyond your wildest imagination what would you do

with it?

Proverbs 29:25 says that the fear of man will bring a snare but those

who trust in God are secure.

Consider Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 1:7; 9:10

What is the fear of the Lord all about anyways?

In our comfortable, God’s my buddy form of Christianity, this is critical to

understand.

I’m not talking about anxious dread and terror type fear; I’m talking about

reverence and awe, worship type fear.

Fear of the Lord means that I carry around with me such a deep awareness,

awe, and reverence for the power, holiness, wisdom, and grace of God that I

wouldn’t think of doing anything but live for His glory.

It means that this worshipful awe is the motivator behind everything I say, desire

and do. It means that God is a lot bigger and more glorious than the people in my

life!

Christians have been delivered from God’s wrath, but not His discipline against

sinful conduct. We need to fear God in regards to:

Philippians 2:12 continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,

1 Peter 1:17 live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.

The person who fears God will fear nothing else.

Does God own the fear of your heart?

Do you care if you displease God or not? Have you been captured by a deep and

worshipful awe of God?

Is His opinion and His desires the first thing that you think of when _________?

It’s the reverence, awe, and honor for God that is the very cornerstone of our

foundation with Him.

We have the benefit of looking at God’s majesty, holiness, and glory in the Word

of God. Look!

If you can’t see something in front of you - either something’s

blocking your view or it’s to far away – to distant to see and you need

to get closer.

Live like a citizen to his King.

Consider the demonstration of fear from Isaiah, Peter and John (Rev. 1:7)

It’s impossible to be devoted to God (and to grow in desire for God) if a person

has no fear of God. It’s impossible to worship God or to love God.

Fearing God means recognizing the infinite gap in worth, in dignity, in majesty

between God and man; between Creator and created.

As we get to know God’s character…

As we hold a sense of God’s presence – recognizing that He’s present

when your online, when your talking on the phone, when your by your

self….

As we hold a constant awareness of our obligation before God…

Does God “own” your fear?

Our disobedience is blatant disregard for God’s authority and majesty.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom.

Look at vs. 21 in Deuteronomy 10. “He is your praise; He is your God….”

Is He your praise?

Or are you your praise? Is she your praise? Is he your praise? Is that degree, or

that activity your praise?

2. Do you have an ever-increasing love for God?

Are you gripped by God’s personal love for you? His specific love for you

expressed through Jesus Christ? (Consider Romans 5:5-8; I John 4:9-10)

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book, or heard a story on the radio

about someone’s life or about a daring deed someone’s done and at the end you

thought, “Wow that was touching…so inspiring.”

Then you take a deep sigh –sniffle – another deep sigh – and that’s it! That’s as

far as the story takes you.

This is not how far I want the gospel to take us – “That was touching” – deep

sigh!

Let the truth of the cross tear you up! Let it consume you. Let it dominate your

thoughts. Be mesmerized by it!

Ask God to help you see the light of His grace against the ugly black backdrop of

your sin and shame!

Consider what God has done to show you His love. Consider what He’s brought

you out of.

Ask the Lord for a greater view of His love for you! (Psalm 130:3-4)

God’s love is unlike anything we’ve ever known! It’s based entirely on the

finished work of Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:35-39

This kind of love should never lead to careless living – it should provoke you to

live increasingly devoted to Him.

Does God “own” your love?

When you are disrespecting your parents, who owns your love?

When you’ll do anything to get someone’s acceptance, who owns your love?

When you’re depressed because things didn’t go your way, who owns your love?

When you’re arguing to make a point, who owns your love?

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 – compelled (controlled); to press on all sides and to

force into a specific direction or course of action. This is the force God’s love is

intended to have on you.

The fear of the God, working together with an apprehension of the love of God

driven deep within our souls produces an intense desire for this one true God!
